What is the max number of meshes and vertices you can have in your Oculus Quest VR project?

For an Oculus Quest VR project, your scene shouldn’t go over 200 meshes and 200-300K vertices. Why? Because similar to a smartphone, the Oculus Quest has limited resources to render your scene. Have a look at the table below to compare the specs of an Oculus Quest with a Samsung phone.

Oculus Quest 2Samsung Galaxy S20 5G
CPUQualcomm Snapdragon XR2 PlatformOcta core (1.8 – 2.8 GHz)
RAM6 GB12 GB
Battery capacity3640 mAh4000 mAh

As you can see, the specs between the Oculus Quest and Samsung smartphone are comparable. But rendering a VR project on your Quest takes as much as double the amount of processing power. This is because VR has to render graphics for both the right and left eye, so while it may take ~30% of your phone’s processing power to render a scene, it would take the Oculus Quest anywhere from 45-60% of processing resources.

All this to say that we recommend not going over 200 meshes and 300k vertices in your scene. We will go over the best ways to optimize your 3D file for the Oculus Quest in future posts.
